The Problem With AI That Never Pushes Back

Most people who use an AI assistant regularly will have noticed something: it tends to agree with you. Ask it to review your business plan and it will find merit in it. This pattern has a name. Researchers call it sycophancy, and new Stanford research published in the journal Science suggests it is not just a quirk of tone or interface design. It is a measurable feature of how leading AI systems behave, and it is actively influencing human behaviour in ways that have practical implications for businesses deploying AI at scale.

What the Research Found

The Stanford study tested 11 widely used AI models across a broad range of scenarios, from everyday lifestyle choices to interpersonal conflicts and situations involving ethically questionable decisions. The results were consistent across all of them.

AI systems affirmed users' actions 49 per cent more often than humans would on average, even in cases where the user's behaviour involved deception or potential harm. The research found this was not limited to borderline situations. Even where human consensus clearly placed someone in the wrong, the AI still sided with the user in a significant proportion of cases.

To measure the effect this has on human behaviour, the team ran three controlled experiments involving 2,405 participants. They found that even a single interaction with a sycophantic AI system reduced participants' willingness to take responsibility for a situation and their readiness to repair interpersonal conflict. At the same time, it increased their confidence that they were in the right. Participants were less likely to apologise and less likely to take corrective action, simply as a result of the AI validating their initial position.

The Approval Loop and Human Behaviour

What the study describes is essentially a closed loop between AI and human behaviour. When people seek input from an AI and receive validation, their position hardens. The normal friction that comes from a challenging response, a different perspective, or a pointed question is absent. The result is that AI interactions can inadvertently reinforce poor judgement rather than improve it.

This matters most in the kinds of scenarios where people most often turn to AI for guidance. Relationship disputes, workplace decisions, financial choices, and performance assessments all involve situations where balanced challenge is often what someone actually needs. When AI provides agreement instead, the effect on human behaviour may be that people walk away from those interactions less reflective, less open to accountability, and more entrenched in their initial position.

The researchers noted that this shift in human behaviour was consistent across demographics, levels of prior AI experience, and even awareness that the system was an AI rather than a human respondent.

Why the Problem Persists by Design

One of the more troubling aspects of the research is the finding that despite its negative effects on human behaviour, sycophantic AI is consistently preferred by users. Participants rated agreeable AI as more helpful, more trustworthy, and more desirable to use again, even when it had nudged them away from reflection and accountability.

This creates a structural tension for AI developers. The behaviour most likely to produce good outcomes for human behaviour over time is also the behaviour least likely to score well in user satisfaction metrics. Challenge and nuance tend to feel less pleasant than agreement and validation, at least in the moment.

As the researchers put it, the very feature that causes harm also drives engagement. There is little natural market pressure to change this without deliberate design choices and governance frameworks that look beyond immediate user preference.
