ChatGPT Temporary Chat: What It Protects, What It Doesn't, and Why It Matters

If you use ChatGPT regularly for work, you have probably found yourself pausing before typing something sensitive. A client situation. An HR matter. A commercial negotiation you are not ready to share widely. Financial details that are not public yet.

The concern is reasonable. Anything you type into a standard ChatGPT conversation is saved to your chat history, can be used to build your Memory profile, and may contribute to OpenAI's model training. For everyday questions that is fine. For sensitive business discussions, it is worth thinking more carefully.

ChatGPT has a feature built specifically for these moments: Temporary Chat. Here is what it does, where its limits are, and how to make the most of it.

What Temporary Chat Actually Is

The simplest way to think about Temporary Chat is as incognito mode for your AI conversations. When you start one, ChatGPT creates a fresh, isolated session that sits completely outside your normal account activity.

Three things do not happen in a Temporary Chat session. The conversation does not appear in your chat history sidebar. ChatGPT does not use the content to create or update your Memory. And the session is not included in OpenAI's model training pipeline.

When you close the window, the conversation disappears from your view entirely. No trace of it appears alongside your saved conversations.

That makes it meaningfully different from a standard chat, where everything you type becomes part of an accumulating record that shapes future responses and potentially informs how the model develops.

How to Start One in Seconds

Temporary Chat is straightforward to access and available on all subscription tiers, including the free plan.

Open ChatGPT as normal. In the top right corner of the screen, look for a circular button labelled Temporary, or a dotted speech bubble icon depending on which version you are using. Click it and a new session opens with a visual indicator confirming you are in Temporary Chat mode. You will see confirmation within the conversation window itself that the session will not be saved to history and will not update Memory.

Start your conversation as you normally would. When you are done, close the chat. Return to your regular chats at any point by clicking back into your saved history as normal.

The session requires no setup, no settings change, and no additional permission. It is available whenever you need it.

Where It Makes a Real Difference at Work

The use cases that benefit most from Temporary Chat are ones where you want the thinking support of ChatGPT without creating a lasting record.

HR matters are a common example. Drafting a difficult conversation, working through how to handle a disciplinary situation, or thinking through a sensitive redundancy process are all things where you might want AI assistance but would not want those specifics sitting in your chat history indefinitely.

Client matters are another. Discussing a client's financial position, working through a commercial dispute, or drafting confidential correspondence are situations where discretion matters. Temporary Chat keeps that work contained to the session.

Business planning at an early or sensitive stage, legal drafting, financial modelling and anything involving personal data about individuals are all areas where keeping the conversation separate from your everyday ChatGPT use is simply good practice.

The Limits You Need to Know

Temporary Chat is a useful tool, but it is not a guarantee of complete privacy. There are a few important caveats that business users in particular should understand.

First, OpenAI retains copies of Temporary Chat sessions on its servers for up to 30 days for safety purposes. The content will not appear in your account and will not be used for training, but it is not immediately deleted the moment you close the window.

Second, ChatGPT may still reference limited context from Temporary Chat sessions in rare situations related to safety and security. This is a narrow exception, but it means the session is not entirely isolated under all circumstances.

Third, and most significantly for any business with legal exposure, Temporary Chat sessions can be subject to legal hold. In June 2025, a US federal court ruled in the ongoing New York Times v OpenAI case that OpenAI must retain certain data, including content from Temporary Chat sessions, as part of litigation preservation obligations. That ruling is a useful reminder that no consumer privacy feature eliminates the possibility of data being retained for legal reasons.

None of this makes Temporary Chat a poor choice. It is substantially more private than a standard session. But it is worth understanding what you are actually getting rather than assuming it works like local encryption.

How It Differs from Turning Off Memory

ChatGPT gives you separate controls for Memory and for Temporary Chat, and they are not the same thing.

Disabling Memory in your settings stops ChatGPT from building a profile of your preferences and past conversations. But your chats are still saved to your history and can still contribute to model training depending on your plan and settings.

Temporary Chat goes further on those specific points: no history entry, no memory update, no training contribution, for that individual session. Think of Memory as a global account setting and Temporary Chat as a session-level override. Both have their place.

A Practical Habit Worth Building

The most useful way to think about Temporary Chat is as the default mode for anything you would not be comfortable seeing appear in a shared screen or a screenshot.

If you would hesitate before forwarding the conversation to a colleague, it probably belongs in a Temporary Chat. If it is general research, drafting, or problem-solving with no particular sensitivity, your normal chat history is fine.

Building that habit takes almost no extra effort. The feature is one click away, available on every plan, and requires no configuration. The only cost is remembering to use it.

What This Means for Businesses

For businesses using ChatGPT and similar AI tools as part of everyday work, Temporary Chat is one small part of a broader set of decisions about what data goes where. Staff training on AI privacy settings, clear policies on what types of information should and should not be entered into external AI tools, and an understanding of where data actually ends up are all increasingly important questions.

Data security and AI governance sit at the intersection of how modern businesses manage risk. The Short Version

ChatGPT's Temporary Chat feature is simple, free to use and meaningfully more private than a standard conversation. It keeps sensitive sessions out of your history and out of your Memory. It does not save to your account and is not used for training.

It is not a zero-risk environment, and it should not be treated as a substitute for proper data handling policies. But for the everyday moments when you want to think something through with AI assistance without leaving a permanent record, it is exactly the right tool for the job.
